Ola, Uber, Rapido Drivers on Strike in Maharashtra: 70% Cabs Off the Roads in Mumbai, Pune & Nagpur

Strike in Mumbai

A large-scale strike by drivers associated with ride-hailing platforms like Ola, Uber, and Rapido has disrupted daily commuting in major cities across Maharashtra, including Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur. The protest, which began earlier this week, has intensified with a major sit-in demonstration planned at Azad Maidan in South Mumbai today.

According to initial reports, around 70% of cabs under these platforms have gone off-road, leaving thousands of commuters stranded, especially at high-traffic areas such as airports and railway stations.

Why Are Ride-Hailing Drivers Protesting?

The agitating drivers are raising concerns over low pay, rising operational costs, and unfair policies by app-based platforms. Their primary demands include:

  • Fare parity with Mumbai’s traditional black-and-yellow taxis

  • Ban on bike taxis like Rapido

  • Restriction on the issuance of new auto and taxi permits

  • Lower commission cuts taken by app companies

  • Fixed base fare to ensure minimum income

  • Formation of a Welfare Board for gig drivers

  • Introduction of a Maharashtra Gig Workers' Act for better labour protection

Many drivers say they are earning less than ₹300–₹500 per day after long hours due to high platform commissions, increased competition, and rising fuel prices.

Has the Government Responded?

Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik met with driver union representatives earlier this week. However, no substantial resolution emerged from the talks.

In a statement quoted by Times Now, Sarnaik said, “We explained everything, but the protest is still on. That’s not right.” The drivers, however, say the government has offered only verbal assurances without firm action.

How Is the Strike Impacting Commuters?

The impact on commuters, especially in Mumbai, has been severe:

  • Long wait times on ride-hailing apps

  • Skyrocketing surge pricing during peak hours

  • Multiple cancellations due to lack of driver availability

  • Disruption of school transport, airport pickups, and daily commutes

Airports and railway authorities in Mumbai have advised travelers to arrange transportation in advance to avoid last-minute trouble.

What’s Next?

As of now, the strike shows no signs of slowing down, and driver unions say they will continue until concrete policy measures are taken. A state-level protest at Azad Maidan today is expected to draw hundreds of gig workers from across Maharashtra.

Until a resolution is reached, commuters are advised to seek alternate travel options, such as local trains, buses, or traditional taxis.
